Festival goers urged to look after their mates

Local police are reminding people to have a good time at the upcoming North West Festival but to be aware of themselves and their friends.

Port Hedland police Sergeant Jason Gentili said police were not out to lock up people and urged attendees to come and say g'day to officers, who would be minding the front gate.

"We're going to see if we can get some supplies of bottled water to hand out to keep people hydrated," he said.

"But people need to be aware of their surroundings and their friends, and make sure they don't leave personal belongings lying around.

"It's a great idea to camp at the festival, if you can, and make sure you don't let your mates walk home by themselves."

However, Sgt Gentili said police would have a zero-tolerance approach towards any violence or misbehaviour at the festival.

"We won't tolerate drugs, and anyone misbehaving will be issued with a move-on order and will not be allowed to return to the festival," he said.

"People just need to have a good time and not act the goat."

The North West Festival starts this Friday night and will run until Sunday at the Port Hedland Turf Club.
