Newman will be abuzz with festivities this weekend as the Fortescue Festival hits town and locals return for the Back to Newman Reunion.

Resident and event co-ordinator Lisa Rickert first came to town as a toddler in 1970 and has lived in Newman ever since.

This year, she has invited people to come back to visit the town and enjoy all that the busy month of August has to offer.

“Many of the reunion attendees contributed to our town volunteering their time on committees at the schools, with sporting clubs and by being involved with emergency services,” she said.

“Some literally built buildings.

“It gives the residents, sports and social clubs and schools in town the opportunity to learn some history ... and meet people who lived here in the early days.”

As part of the reunion, many events will be taking place from August 12 to 22.

It has been no small feat for Ms Rickert to get the reunion happening, after spending almost a year talking with former residents and collecting old photographs of the town.

“Stories and photos are already being shared and friends and families are being reunited,” she said. “There is a very positive vibe among the community and attendees.”

Meet and greets are happening most mornings at Newman Visitor Centre, with a historical photo collection on display in the function room next to the facility.

All events are for both past and present residents to enjoy together.

Highlights during the 10 days include a welcome event, school tours, the football grand final, blessing of the graves and a speedway meeting.
