FMG four take the plunge

Four Fortescue Metals Group employees have returned to Hedland after taking a leap of faith in the second annual Central Park Plunge earlier this month.

Mark Komene, Matt Herwig, Norm Kenny and Rafael Gomez conquered the 50 storeys of Perth’s Central Park building to raise funds for Ronald McDonald House, which offers accommodation to families with ill children.

The men faced down more than 200m of building as part of the challenge.

For Mr Herwig, it was not until he reached the top of the building that he realised just how high the 50-storey building was.

“It was quite scary at the 50th floor,” he said.

“I tried to get them to let me go down forward to make it even scarier, but I couldn’t.

“It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

Mr Herwig was proud to announce that none of his Hedland colleagues chickened out of the plunge, despite concerns after Mr Komene admitted to theNorth West Telegraph in the lead-up to the event that he was afraid of heights.

Mr Herwig said the event was very well run.

He was surprised to see even some 70-year-old participants having a go, proving you are never too old to give it a go.

FMG staff managed to raise more than $64,000 for the cause.

Mr Komene was ranked in fifth position on the fundraiser leaderboard, raising more than $5000.
