Football: Ready Rovers beat Kats

North Pilbara Football LeagueNorth West Telegraph

Port Hedland Rovers moved two points clear of second-placed Falcons on Saturday night, posting an impressive 79-point victory against Karratha Kats.

The ladder-leading Rovers put on a clinical display in the second half, booting 10 goals to Kats’ two after the main break.

Sharpshooter Jared Lane continued his impressive form with four majors for the home side, while Chris Sims and Tristan Myers chimed in with three goals each.

The well-drilled Kats took it up to Port Hedland in the first half, trailing by just 23 points at half time but couldn’t maintain the intensity in the final two quarters as the well-rested Rovers, who are yet to travel this season, ran the visitors off their legs.

Rovers will go into the Foundation Day long weekend bye sitting two-points ahead of Falcons who had to come from behind to record a surprise draw against Wickham Wolves on Friday night, 10.15 (75) to 11.9 (75).

In the final game of Round 5, South Hedland Swans failed to back up last week’s impressive come-from-behind victory against Wolves to lose to Dampier by 62 points.

Swans started well enough, booting four goals in the opening term to trail by two points at quarter time but the final three quarters belonged to Sharks, who booted 16 goals to five after the opening stanza.

Matthew Wilson was terrific for the victors in booting five goals while Coel O’Gorman had three.

For Swans, Tyson Feist continued his strong form in front of goal, kicking four majors.

In reserves action, Rovers remained undefeated with a strong 81-point victory against Kats. Josh Van Den Berg and Troy Melville kicked three goals each for the victors.

Swans’ reserves remain win-less after going down to Sharks by 132 points while Falcons easily disposed of Wolves by 116 points.
