You make have noticed a new, friendly voice hit the airwaves on Spirit Hedland 1026, as veteran radio announcer David “Davo” Eckhart joined the team at the studio in South Hedland last week.

Eckhart has had an affinity with the Pilbara that has spanned more than five decades, living and working in the region on and off since he was six-years-old.

After stints with the ABC, DMG radio and community radio, Eckhart said it was good to get back to his “Pilbara roots.”

“I was at primary school in the Pilbara when the rail line from Hedland to Newman was finally completed,” he said.

“I was working on the largest open cut iron ore mine in the Pilbara when Australia celebrated its bicentenary.

“And I was teaching at a Pilbara primary school when Cathy Freeman won Olympic Gold in Sydney.

“In short, I’ve lived, studied or worked in the region in the 1960's, 70's, 80's, 90's, and 00's and I’m keen to add the 2010's to the list.”

Eckhart said he hoped the new afternoon show would reflect his passion for the region and love of community radio.

“After completing schooling, I began working "down pit" at the local community radio station and from that moment on I was hooked,” he said.

“After community radio, stints with the ABC, DMG radio and Southern Cross Austereo, it feels good to get back in the Pilbara groove.

“I am prepared and willing to talk any sport and local issues with the community, drop me a line on 9140 1670.”
