Hedland Arts Council members will seek tips on how to turn marine debris into works of art in September when renowned artist Cecile Williams holds a workshop for the community group.

Williams held exhibitions in Perth in 2010 and 2015, in which she first converted marine waste from Christmas Island into works of art, focusing on transforming discarded fishing nets in the later show.

She will now look to pass on those skills to HARTZ members as they prepare for this year’s recycled art competition, ReeFstARTz, in which participants must enter pieces made of debris from Hedland beaches.

Williams said locals should let their imaginations run wild when combing local beaches.

“Please bring along a bag full of materials you would like to work with that you have found or collected from the beach,” she said.

“These could include beach ropes, nets, plastics of all kinds, toys, thongs, assorted objects … driftwood (and) skeletons from birds, fish (and) turtles.”
