Hedland officers mourn the loss of Ray Kidd

ALEX MASSEYNorth West Telegraph

It was with heavy hearts that the South Hedland police station farewelled one of its favourite sons last month with the passing of Senior Constable Ray Kidd.

Sen. Const. Kidd, who had been in the service for almost three decades, was diagnosed with stage four melanoma earlier this year and sadly succumbed to his battle in the early hours of September 10.

South Hedland police Senior Sergeant Ron Patchett, who attended Sen. Const. Kidd’s police funeral on September 17, said his former colleague passed away in the comfort of his own home after Police Legacy relocated his family back to Perth.

“He was a very devoted, loyal, always happy and helpful man,” Sen. Sgt Patchett said. “He did his job without bias (and) he fought to the end.”

A father of two, Sen. Const. Kidd is survived by his two sons and beloved wife Bernie.

Earlier this year the Port Hedland community raised more than $52,000 at a quiz night to assist Sen. Const. Kidd’s family.

More than 400 people attended the event, held at the Polar Aviation hangar, on May 12.
