HMAS Warramunga visits Port Hedland

Residents who headed down to the harbour last week were greeted with the unusual sight of a navy ship at dock.

The HMAS Warramunga, one of eight Anzac class frigates operated by the Royal Australian Navy, was berthed in the harbour from Tuesday to Thursday last week.

According to a Department of Defence spokesman, the ship was berthed to conduct a logistics resupply visit.

He said the vessel had been patrolling the North West Shelf region.

"During the visit, several tours were conducted onboard by Port Hedland Port Authority personnel as well as local Sea Cadets," the spokesman said.

"Twenty personnel from Warramunga also enjoyed the opportunity to tour the BHP Iron Ore Facility."

After rousing the interest of locals, some of whom took to their own private vessels to take photos of the ship, it has since resumed its patrol of the North West Shelf.

The ship is usually based at HMAS Stirling on Garden Island off the coast of Perth.
