Is this still WA's cleanest beach?

SHANNON HAMPTONNorth West Telegraph

Port Hedland will be in the running for the 2012 WA Clean Beaches Awards for the fourth year in a row.

Cemetery Beach and Pretty Pool have been nominated in all five categories, including Litter Prevention, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Protection, Friendly Beach and Community Action.

In 2011, both beaches were highly commended in the Environmental Protection category and won the Community Action category in 2010.

Keep Australia Beautiful WA Council chairman Mel Hay said the awards encouraged the care, protection and management of coastal regions through beautification, education, environmental programs, safety programs, partnerships and community pride.

“The awards look at not only litter prevention initiatives but also community programs and natural resource management to examine which WA beach deserves the title of WA’s cleanest beach,” she said.

Mayor Kelly Howlett said she was confident the Port Hedland beaches had a good chance of winning.

The beaches will be judged in May and the winners announced at an awards ceremony in early June.
