Hedland’s junior netball players have been shooting so many goals, they were recently named one of Australia’s top 10 netball centres.

The Port Hedland Netball Association has taught hundreds of youngsters aged five to 10 how to play the game since it began netball’s version of Auskick, called ANZ NetSetGO, in 2009.

That achievement was honoured this month when Netball Australia authorities named Hedland one of 10 runners-up in the ANZ NetSetGO Centre of the Year competition.

Hedland netball’s Lisa Lock was delighted.

“Over 100 children participated in Port Hedland Netball Association’s NetSetGO competition this year,” she said.

“Participants learn the skills of netball in a fun environment, gradually working their way towards match play.”

Established by Netball Australia, NetSetGO is a nationally accredited introduction to the game for juniors. Ms Lock said Hedland netball could not run its program without help from the secondary students participating in the V Swans Shooting Goals program, who helped coach the juniors each week.
