Newman women booted goals from beyond 40m and played with broken bones last month as team Red Dirt beat the Bullets by four goals in a thrilling all-girls Aussie Rules game.

Played as a curtain-raiser before the North Pilbara Football League and Newman National Football League clash on May 16, the women showed amazing skills despite having only trained for the previous four weeks.

V Swans regional manager for the East Pilbara and match organiser Chelsea Randall pointed to Newman girl Tilly Kianga as one among many to impress.

"She is a student here at Newman Senior High School and she kicked goals from 40 metres out - she had a perfect drop punt and was really skilful," she said.

With 36 girls taking part - enough for two full teams - and a healthy crowd cheering them on, the game highlighted how much of an appetite there was among Newman women for the game.

The match was thought to be the first women's Aussie Rules game in Newman in about five years.

Male high school students from the V Swans Kicking Goals program also showed their support by acting as runners and boundary umpires, while Newman's AFL masters club president also helped out by coaching the Red Dirt team.

"It was a really good community atmosphere … and everyone got involved to help make it happen," Ms Randall said.

And if anyone doubted how much commitment was on show, Ms Randall said one player broke her finger at training on the Thursday before the game and yet refused to be sidelined.

"(Her finger) was massive, red and broken - you could clearly see it," she said.

"She just taped her fingers together and ended up one of the best players on the ground, playing with a broken finger.

"It just shows you how tough some of the girls are, and how keen (they are) to play footy."

The Newman women meet at Goanna Oval every second Thursday at 6pm for a social game.

The next game is on June 18.
