Remote East Pilbara kids took to painting, movie-making and even puppetry to show off their creativity this month.

The Punmu and Kunawaratiji children joined accomplished artists Jacqueline Warrick and Sarah Landro as part of a two-week residency known as the AWESOME Arts Creative Challenge, sponsored by BHP Billiton.

Ms Landro said the two-week residency, themed This Is Where I Am, particularly focused on showing how film could be used for imaginative storytelling.

“(We hope) the children of these communities will grow to realise the power of photography and the role photo media play in contemporary life, ” she said.

“This … combined with the kids having a really fun time and expressing themselves in the most inspired way possible.”

While parents and teachers from the RAWA Community School last week viewed the final artworks at a special celebration night, selected pieces will also be shown in Perth in October.

They will form part of the 2015 AWESOME International Arts Festival for Bright Young Things at Perth’s Cultural Centre.

The Punmu and Kunawaratiji activities are part of AWESOME’s year-round regional program, which visits regional communities across WA.
