Medal haul for Hedland judo competitors
Sangrok Hedland Judo Club performed well at the recent State titles in Perth, with club members walking away with four gold, three silver and five bronze medals.
The club travelled to Perth by bus with 24 competitors targeting in a range of categories, and 13 club members were also selected as State team representatives for an event in Victoria in June.
Club coach Daniel Zammit said he was proud of the members’ efforts at the event, adding positive comments about his club were pleasing to hear.
“I’m not happy, I’m not so much excited, but I’m proud,” he said.
“It’s not so much about the excellence, but it’s about the effort.”
Flynn Bennett, 13, was the first club member to win back-to-back titles in his senior boys category, while Kimi Grace, 9, also achieved State champion status in her category.
Rebecca Zammit and Tracey Marlow won State titles in the senior women’s divisions, with many other senior and junior club members holding their own on the mat.
Zammit said without the assistance of sponsors such as Northaul Logistics, the Town of Port Hedland and Gravity Cranes, the club may not have made it to Perth, adding the club is now looking for fundraising or sponsorship to take its members to Victoria later this year.
