Miner backs trade training for students

Pilbara miner Fortescue Metals Group has lauded its partnership with Hedland Senior High School to create a Trade Training Centre for local students.
The training centre allows Year 11 and 12 students to gain a Certificate II in Engineering Pathways, as they learn about safety and how to use work shop machinery.
Fortescue has provided $300,000 to the centre over three years to cover the purchase of equipment and materials.
Fortescue general manager of port Fernando Pereira said supporting local students helped create a vibrant and sustainable community.
“The skills and experiences the students gain through facilities like the Trade Training Centre allow them to remain in their local community and seek careers in the industries that are operating where they live,” he said.
“Fortescue is proud to … (help) the next generation of talented professionals have meaningful employment opportunities here in the Pilbara.”
Hedland Senior High School principal Kelly Summers said partnerships with local industry gave students a greater understanding of employment opportunities as well as the responsibilities and expectations they have to meet as apprentices and trainees.
Year 11 students Lydia Ozies and Jessica Vailala are among the first female students at the centre and said they hope to gain employment in the mining sector.
Ms Ozies said she had enjoyed learning oxy welding and wants to secure an apprenticeship after school as a heavy diesel fitter or boilermaker.
