The loud bang heard across South Hedland on Saturday night at about 9.30pm was an aerosol can exploding after being lit on fire, according to police.

South Hedland police Senior Sergeant Dean Snashall said it was not the first time an incident of this nature had been reported to police and warned community members to stop carrying out the dangerous act.

He said he feared it would take someone losing a leg to realise how dangerous and immature it was.
