Offers of help to rebuild park flood in

The Hedland community have offered to help rebuild a local playground after it was burnt down on the weekend.

Marapikurinya Park playground was reduced to barely recognisable ruins by 8am on Sunday as flames tore through the favourite community spot, causing more than $250,000 damage.

Port Hedland Senior Sergeant Jason Gentili said local police were following up the incident and were confident they would charge someone in relation to the fire.

Town of Port Hedland Mayor Kelly Howlett said the authority were extremely disappointed that the fire had occurred.

However, she said the Town had been humbled and pleased to see the outpouring of community support and offers to help rebuild the playground, with staff keen to up the generous offers.

“As an update, our teams worked tirelessly on Sunday to ensure the area was barricaded off and that materials were cleaned up,” she said.

“Next steps are to dismantle the remaining structure and clear out the playground site.

“Our teams are fast-tracking staging options and how we can restore the playground.”

The Town is compiling a list of businesses and people who are interested in supplying goods or services to rebuild the playground and once a complete list is obtained, the Town will beginning planning for a new facility.
