A sidelines fight which broke out during a local Port Hedland football match on Friday night has led to police charging two men with disorderly behaviour.

The men, who police believed to be under the influence of drugs, allegedly sparked a brawl on the sidelines of the Port Hedland Rovers and South Hedland Swans derby game at Colin Matheson Oval.

One of the pair, who was shirtless, held a small dog in his arm while allegedly arguing and fighting with other members in the crowd who were seated under the member’s balcony.

Port Hedland police constable Anthony Higgins said officers caught up with the pair on the other side of the field near a car park after concerned spectators called police for assistance.

Police will allege the men then became aggressive and the second person of interest provided a false name.

A member of the public yelled out for police to move the pair away from the football oval which enraged both men who began swearing, yelling and calling out for a fight, police say.

Const. Higgins said it will be alleged that the men entered into a physical altercation with police and head-butted an officer during their attempts to resist arrest.

The altercation, and providing a false name, led to police charging the second man with obstructing police and providing a false name.

The men were handcuffed and removed from the ground.

They have been summoned to appear in court.
