Pilbara fundraiser shows the love for Montana
When the Woolworths Port Hedland store manager learned two of his employees had their worlds rocked by a cancer diagnosis, he knew he had to lend a hand.
Dave Harding, who has been managing the store for 20 months, organised a fundraiser at the weekend for six-year-old Montana Ytting, who was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma in October 2013.
Montana's mother and grandmother are both long-term staff members at the Port Hedland store. Mr Harding said the idea stemmed from Valentine's Day celebrations and culminated in the Love Weekend for Montana.
Four months on from the diagnosis, Montana's grandmother Wendy Holt said she was struggling to come to grips with the situation, but reassured those who gathered to show their support that Montana was in good spirits.
"She's good, I spent a whole chemotherapy session with her last week," she said.
"She keeps saying she misses Hedland and her school friends.
"It's only during fundraisers like this that really make the situation feel like a reality."
The Love for Montana weekend involved Woolworths staff taking part in a sponsored (stationary) bike ride inside the store and releasing balloons as a symbol of faith.
Woolworths staff who were present to show their support described the event as "a good day" and said they had been overwhelmed by the generosity of community members.
