Pilbara Girl is calling for local indigenous girls and women to apply for a “life-changing” program which seeks to instigate positive change in the personal and professional capacity of young Aboriginal women.

The program is open to indigenous women aged 16 to 25 from Karratha, Roebourne, Wickham, Hedland and their surrounding communities.

Throughout July, entrants participate in a series of workshops focusing on personal and professional development, leadership, deportment and grooming.

The first heat event will be on July 15 and finalists will complete another round of workshops in October before the final.

The 2016 Pilbara Girl will be crowned at a ceremony in Broome on October 7.

Since being named Pilbara Girl runner-up in 2015, Hedland’s Ava Watkins turned her life around in a way she had never thought possible, pursuing a career in modelling, beauty therapy and retail.

Past winners of Pilbara Girl have gone on to walk in WA Fashion Week, participate in youth leadership programs throughout Australia and overseas, and MC at local NAIDOC events.

To apply, head to the Pilbara Girl Facebook page or visit the Goolarri Media website www.goolarri.com/pilbara-girl. Entries close June 22.

Local businesses who are interested in sponsoring the event can contact the Pilbara Girl co-ordinator at tamara@impactmediakarratha.com.au.
