Police are calling for help to identify a man who allegedly exposed himself to members of the public on July 6 near Port Hedland's Cooke Point caravan park.

Port Hedland police acting Sergeant Jaysen Carlisle said witnesses had reported that the man allegedly exposed and performed a sexual act on himself on two separate occasions in the Pretty Pool beach area.

The man then allegedly fled the scene after being chased by the witnesses.

"We are now seeking assistance from the public to identify this man and we would also like to make the community to be aware that this person is around and believed to be behaving in this manner in public," Sgt Carlisle said.

"We are concerned that his behaviour may potentially escalate and lead to other incidents."

An eye witness told the North West Telegraph that local residents believed the man had allegedly performed a sexual act on himself in public on two occasions in June, however, police would not confirm this.

"I can't say that this man has done it (on another day) before (July 6), but once is more than enough," Sgt Carlisle said.

He said police would now like to question a man believed to be between 28-and-35 years-old, Caucasian and solidly built at around 90kg and between 172 and180cm in height.

The alleged offender has short brown hair and was wearing a white or very pale shirt and either full length grey khaki pants or three quarter board shorts, which were grey on top and green in the lower leg.

He also had a soft, full-brimmed hat with a pale blue visor with white trim and distinctive, pink-coloured Asics sneakers.

Anyone with information should contact the Port Hedland Police Station on 9173 8100 or South Hedland Police Station on 9160 2100.
