Racing: Win for Dine and Wine

NIGEL WESTONNorth West Telegraph

Exmouth trained galloper Dine and Wine was a most impressive victor of the $17,000 Harding Cup at Roebourne on the weekend.

In a top training performance by Peter Dellar, the 4-year-old was able to hold off all challenges in the straight to record only his second career win in the time honoured race.

Ridden expertly by Andrew Masters, Dine and Wine jumped perfectly and settled second outside the leader Successful Spin with Briello just behind.

As it turned out that was close to how the race panned out with the leaders dominating the race.

Dine and Wine grabbed the lead near the home corner and although Briello tried hard, the cheers were being heard from the Exmouth contingent very strongly.

A maiden winner at Roebourne only a month ago, Dine and Wine handled the rise in class with ease and looks set to record more wins at the course.

The victory continues the great success that Peter Dellar has at Roebourne, which has turned into a home away from home for him.

A nail biting finish in the $12,000 Rio Tinto Handicap resulted in a dead heat for first place between Supreme Royal and Pentire Point.

Both horses travelled well during the run and were only a few lengths from the leaders at the 600 metre mark.

Early leader On Eighty Degrees was quickly grabbed by Supreme Royal with Pentire Point getting a nice run on the inside.

Supreme Royal took a length break at the 200 metre mark but Pentire Point was still finishing strongly.

It still looked like Supreme Royal would just hang on, but on the line the judges were unable to separate the pair.

Both horses will be in hard to beat in the Roebourne Cup on July 23, whilst Rock Of Tara was spotted running home well for fourth place.

Wagin trainer Angela Smith had a nice welcome to Roebourne, winning race one with Bombard at her first trip to the Nor West Jockey Club.

A welcome addition to the Pilbara training ranks, Smith would’ve appreciated the break neck speed by the early leaders in the Avis Car Hire Handicap.

A smart ride by Simone Altieri resulted in Bombard joining in at the right time in the straight and passed the tiring brigade with ease to win by seven lengths.

Altieri was in the winners circle again with Vodka Lime successful in the $10,000 Decmil Handicap.

Vodka Lime was able to lead all the way and withstood a surge from Dan The Fox, who looked the winner at the 200 metre mark.

However Vodka Lime loves the Roebourne track and wasn’t going to concede defeat, giving Bunbury trainer Ray Malpass victory.

Peter Dellar trained a double with Unlikely Suspect successful in Race four, also giving jockey Masters two winners for the day.

Zenatribe was a most worthy winner of the $7,250 Karratha Tavern Maiden for t trainer Steve Meadowcroft and jockey Kelly Davidson.

An excellent crowd attended the Ladies Day meeting, with The Fashions in The Field also a hotly contested event.

The Nor West Jockey Club now looks forward to Roebourne Cup Day on July 23.

Racing returns to Port Hedland on Sunday for Ladies Day.
