You may have noticed a couple of new voices hit the airwaves last week, as two ambitious students from Perth enjoyed a taste of life in the studio at Spirit Hedland 1026.

Boom Radio students Daniel Howden and Alex Carter Noske were selected for the week-long internship, which gave the dynamic duo invaluable hands-on broadcasting experience in a regional setting.

Alex said his experience in Port Hedland had exceeded expectations and his time at Spirit Radio had given him the confidence to pursue a life-long dream of working in radio.

“It surprised me how nice the town is, not only the vast scale of it and the heat, but also how nice the people are,” he said.

“Coming to Hedland has given me a good idea of the wide range of tasks we would be doing at a radio station — we’ve helped produce some of the shows, done some air checks and gone out with the street team in the Road Runner.

“I love the fact that in a regional market, you get to be involved with the community a lot more. Everyone knows everyone here to a certain extent and having that connectivity is great.”

Daniel said their internship at Spirit Radio would help give them an edge over other graduates entering the industry.

“When we finally go into a regional market, we will have a rough idea of what we’re going to be getting into — it really sets us up for the future,” he said.

“Leaving home, you wonder if people are going to be welcoming and then coming here, the community have been so friendly and it certainly makes you feel a lot better about going into a regional market.

“Once I’ve finished my Advanced Diploma in Screen and media (Radio Broadcasting), I would love to have a career overseas as an announcer.

“There’s something so personal about radio; you feel like you’re talking one on one with your audience ... I love that personal connectivity.”
