Record-breaking event delights

Fishermen and women descended on Hedland’s choppy waters last weekend for the annual Pil Barra Fishing Tournament.

The event, which was sponsored by Auslec, ran on Saturday and Sunday and saw the Port Hedland Game Fishing Club break a record for the most competitors to take part in any of their events.

Juniors and seniors joined to vie for the many awards which included champion angler and the highly coveted biggest barra prize, which was taken out by James Douglas-Henry for his whopping 100cm catch.

Co-ordinator Hedley McManus said despite less than ideal conditions for fishers, the weekend’s event went off without a hitch.

“A lot of people in Hedland have got a passion for fishing, ” he said.

“It’s part of the lifestyle here.

“Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves this weekend which is most important.”

Young anglers Josh and Kayde Denney, who have taken part in the last three events, were supported by their pop Bob at the weekend, with the trio reeling in some spectacular fish.

Josh’s 1.47kg mangrove Jack saw him beat out the big boys for the title.

“We had a good weekend and we hope to do it again, ” Josh said.

Josh Townsend won the prize for capturing the heaviest salmon, at 5.4kg, while Wayne Maxwell was the champion angler.
