Ten generous Hedland residents have saddled up for their last big ride in the Great Cycle Challenge, a fundraising event in aid of Kids Cancer Research.

The fundraising initiative for the national Children's Medical Research Institute encourages people of all ages and fitness levels to get on their bikes during October and ride to fight kids' cancer.

Team Fit Az Hedland have ridden 5,079.2 km collectively since October 1, raising more than $12,000 along the way for cancer research.

Team captain Juan Vermeulen said the riders added a further 100km each to their tally last weekend during their ride from South to Port Hedland.

Mr Vermeulen said by the end of the month he alone would have completed his target of riding 50km a day for a total of 1500km.

“I personally am riding for my mum Christa de Boer, who is a cancer survivor and an inspiration to us all,” he said.

“But every hill we climb, every kilometre we pedal, is to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve.”

Right now, cancer is the largest killer of children from disease in Australia.

Over 600 Australian children are diagnosed with cancer every year.
