Clean up and restoration works are underway at Marapikurrinya Park following the arson attack on the playground last month.

On October 20 Police arrested four boys aged between 11 and 12 for allegedly setting fire to the much loved playground in Port Hedland, causing more than $250,000 damage.

Mayor Kelly Howlett said the Town of Port Hedland would work with the community to determine how the new playground was rebuilt.

“Our team will be engaging with kids, parents and community members on what they want and how it should be rebuilt,” she said.

“The site is owned by BHP Billiton Iron Ore and managed by the Town of Port Hedland and we are working collaboratively with them on the remediation of the site.

“We are also committed to involving the community in the rebuild process …further details will be released shortly.”

Ms Howlett said the Town was humbled by the generous community offers to help re-build this playground.

“We know what a treasured play area it was for our kids, families and visitors alike,” she said.

“Once a complete list is obtained, our team will be in contact once the restoration plan finalised.

"The area remains off limits and we ask community members to stay away from the site.”

Ms Howlett said insurance would cover a large proportion of the rebuild.
