Riders gear up for Bike Week fun
Hedland residents took to two wheels earlier this month to celebrate Bike Week by taking part in social rides, triathlon and BMX events.
Hedland Tri-Sports kicked off the weekend activities early on March 12, holding a triathlon at the Civic Centre, before Hedland BMX hosted a have-a-try day later in the afternoon.
The next day community members grabbed their wheels for a social 15km adults’ ride and a 5km family ride along Hedland’s foreshore.
Volunteers and Town staff joined in by handing out fruit snacks and setting up bike related stalls, while scooter and BMX professional Ben Thomas was also on hand.
Thomas, from Perth company Freestyle Now, had earlier taught scooter and BMX tricks at a series of workshops at the South and Port Hedland skate parks.
Having also run workshops when the South Hedland skate park opened last year, he said he had noticed an improvement in local youngsters.
“I have a couple of them on Facebook I talk to and they are super-stoked (with the South skate park), they have been practising quite a bit, ” he said.
“So we’ve had a really good turnout again, there have been a lot of kids and they’ve been loving it.”
