Rivalry was fierce between Australia and New Zealand players who took to the court in South Hedland on Friday for the annual Hedland Bloody Slow Cup.

With the final score 32-21, the Aussies claimed the title back from the Kiwis, who won last year.

Bloody Slow Cup founder Fran Haintz said the event was a long-running tradition, held every April since 2002 to celebrate the the Anzac spirit and a friendly rivalry between Aussies and Kiwis.

“Netball is the biggest sport in the town participation wise. so we like to do lots of fun activities to engage the community,” she said.

“There is always a strong rivalry between the Aussies and Kiwis, who like to egg each other on but its all in the name of a bit of fun.

“It’s also to recognise the diversity of our community, we have all sorts of people living in our multi-cultural community.”

Ms Haintz encouraged locals interested in playing netball to visit the Port Hedland Netball Association website or go to their page on Facebook.
