Port Hedland Primary students decorated honky nuts, made bead jewellery and created turtle and boomerang artworks to celebrate NAIDOC Week.

They learnt about traditional Aboriginal art forms symbolising man and woman, people sitting, waterholes, spears, emu and more.

Teacher Michelle Cockie said each classroom block undertook a different art activity designed to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. “It’s about having fun and showing respect towards the culture,” she said.

“The kids love it.” Ms Cockie also said she was impressed by how much the students already knew about indigenous culture such as the meaning behind the three colours on the Aboriginal flag.
