Port Hedland Primary staff and students joined acting Mayor Camilo Blanco and long-time resident Arnold Carter to celebrate 110 years of schooling in town earlier this week.

The school hosted a special morning assembly and photo shoot on Monday to commemorate the founding of the original Port Hedland Primary in McKay Street on October 1, 1906.

Incredibly, the school’s original building still stands, despite being founded just 10 years after Hedland itself was gazetted as a town.

Port Hedland Primary teacher Kylie Unkovich said students had been researching the school’s history alongside other historical moments, including, surprisingly, the creation of the teddy bear

“For instance, our Year 3-4 block have created teddy bear displays because teddies came out in 1900 and were named after (former US President) Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt,” she said.

Port Hedland Primary will also hold an open day tonight from 5pm to 6.30pm.

All community members are invited.
