The Town of Port Hedland has reminded residents selling or giving away cats or dogs they must first microchip or register the animals.

The reminder comes as Hedland residents often advertised puppies and kittens for sale on social media sites, such as Facebook.

The Town also reminded residents certain dogs, such as pit bull terriers, could not be sold or given away because of the Dog Act’s Restricted Breeds condition.

The local government said in a statement it would prosecute any person who is associated with breeding, selling or giving away restricted breeds.

Other restricted breeds included the dogo Argentino, fila Brasileiro, Japanese pit bull terrier, perro de presa Canario or presa Canario and any other breed of dog that Australian laws prohibit the importation of.

Residents can contact the Town’s ranger service on 9158 9741 for more information.
