Workers declare war on litter
A group of Hedland contractors have taken a small step in tackling the town’s growing litter problem and are encouraging others to follow suit.
Downer Australia’s Inner Harbour Project team take three hours out of their work day every second Sunday to collect rubbish along the Great Northern Highway.
The project was started by store person Jacqui Mclean, who said she was sick of seeing litter while driving between Port and South Hedland.
“We decided we would get out and help the community and clean it up as it’s obviously a lot of the contractor’s mess that’s been brought off site,” she said.
“Rather than leaving it on the side of the road we thought we’d pick it up and put it where it’s meant to be — the rubbish tip.”
She said the group had found money, take-away wrappers, empty pallets, beer bottles and debit cards.
“Last week we collected 42 bags of rubbish and the week before it would have been well over 60,” Ms Mclean said.
“I’d like to think we are making a difference. When I first brought it up I thought people were going to think I’m stupid but now we have gone out and done something about it we have noticed how much rubbish is actually on the side of the road.”
Port Hedland Mayor Kelly Howlett applauded Downer Australia for the initiative.
“What a great example they are setting — not only for contracting companies, but the community as a whole,” she said.
“On behalf of the council, I extend a big congratulations and thanks to Downer Australia for contributing to making Port Hedland a place where we are all proud to live and work.”
Town of Port Hedland chief executive Mal Osborne commended the group.
“I commend them for this fantastic effort and urge others to follow suit,” he said.
“Together we can all make a big difference.”
