Queensland’s top cop is temporarily stepping away from his duties following a shock cancer scare.

Commissioner Steve Gollschewski will take immediate leave due to an unexpected cancer diagnosis, the Queensland Police Service confirmed on Friday.

“Deputy Commissioner Shane Chelepy will commence the role of Acting Commissioner from Saturday to ensure continuity of leadership,” the police said.

“The Commissioner requests privacy at this time and appreciates the support of his colleagues and the community.”

Commissioner Gollschewski took up the top job in April last year, becoming the state’s 21st commissioner after more than 40 years as a police officer.
