A “freak” storm made itself known last Wednesday evening, sparking a collection of dramatic and stunning images by our readers.

While the weather station at Port Hedland International Airport was recording wind speeds of 83km/h and the skies turned grey, residents did not miss the chance to pull out their cameras and take some once-in-a-lifetime snaps.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the storm was not unusual, but required a specific set of conditions to occur.

“Normally this happens inland and Port Hedland has a sea breeze which keeps the storms out,” a spokesman said.

“The cell itself came in from further east, just inland of the coast.”

The storm continued south-west and died out after producing a number of lightning strikes.
