The Department of Mines and Petroleum has charged Crushing Services International Pty Ltd in relation to the death of a Pilbara mine worker in August last year.

Electrician Kurt Williams died on August 14 while working as a contractor at Fortescue Metal Group's Christmas Creek mine.

His employer, CSI, has been charged under the Mines and Safety Inspection Act for failing to provide a safe working environment. The first court mention is scheduled for August 5 in the South Hedland Magistrates Court, but may be subject to change.

Mr Williams was greasing a motor when he was fatally crushed by a ladder attached to a tripper unit at the top of the ore processing facility.

DMP acting executive director for resources safety Ivor Roberts said: "Tragedies like the death of Mr Williams are solemn reminders of why safety needs to be the number one priority for all mine operators.

"One death is one too many - we want every mining worker out there returning to their family and friends, safe and sound at the end of their rosters."
