Further maintenance work at South Hedland Aquatic Centre meant the second round of the Hedland Water Polo Association's competition moved to Gratwick swimming pool on Friday evening.

The ladies started proceedings with a close battle between the Port and South Hedland teams.

Key players for the combined Port side were Briohny Evans and Kathryn Fisher.

South goalie Tamara Simpson's outstanding performance kept the game close, but it was not enough to stop the strong Port side winning 11-10.

The men's competition was contested by the association's country week team, who played the Hedland All-Stars in another skilful nail-biter.

The standout player for Country Week was Dan Waver, who saved some remarkable shots.

The game was fast-paced, led by Josh Blair and Brad Horseman, who both scored two goals for All-Stars.

Aaron Ellis-Kerr scored three late goals in the second half to hand Country Week a two-goal win.

The evening concluded with a friendly mixed scratch match and poolside barbecue.

The water polio action returns to Gratwick swimming pool this Friday at 6.30pm.
