The Port Hedland Squash Committee held its first meeting of the year last week ahead of the inter-club competition launch this weekend.

The competition will be played between Dampier, Karratha, Wickham and Port Hedland.

The first match for Hedland will be an away game in Karratha against Wickham.

Club chairman Jamie Hohapata said the Hedland team were ready to go, but needed more support from the community.

"Certainly the key for me is to encourage as many people as we possibly can to register," he said.

"We're particularly interested in females, we'd certainly like to have a female division of players, there's a bit of a gender imbalance."

After the inter-club competition kicks off there will also be a weekly pennant - the Port Hedland in-house competition - which will start March 13. Pennant registrations are open now and the fee is $30, but the cut-off will be March 1.

Hohapata also encouraged people to get involved in the ongoing social games at 6.30pm on Thursday nights.

"Anyone who wants to come off the street and play squash has the opportunity to get involved," he said.

Hohapata said if the club got enough amateur players they'd start a competition among them to lift their skills and provide coaching and training clinics.

"We're also keen to hear from anyone who is interested in throwing something back into Squash Club, if there are any potential sponsors out there, we'd be keen to have a discussion," he said.
