Hedland locals took to the bowling green on Sunday afternoon for the Port Hedland Bowling Club opening day event.

The game was the first of the season and club captain Terry Keating said the turnout was better than expected.

"It's really good to see so many people here," he said.

"For us now, the next event will be the annual 11-week Corporate Bowls competition, kicking off on April 9, and the eight-week pennants, which should start later in the month."

Keating said there would also be regular scroungers events but no calendar for those or the pennants had yet been organised.

"We're waiting for the Pilbara league fixtures to come out and then we wrap all our games around that," he said.

People can become a member of the Port Hedland Bowling Club through the adjoining Cooke Point Recreation Club.

Keating said family memberships were about $60 to $70 for 12 months and people needed to join in order to play. "Unfortunately, we can't have anyone just stroll in," he said.
