Port Hedland gets saucy for fundraiser

One of the biggest events on Port Hedland's social calendar went off without many hitches on Saturday night, with hundreds of people turning out for Pimps and Pros.

The event was held this year at the Walkabout Hotel Motel, with the most commonly heard gripes being the extreme temperature and debilitating humidity of some 90 per cent.

Participants broke up dancing and drinking with mutterings about the heat.

The temperature peaked at 31C at 8.30pm, however the apparent temperature was 5C hotter at a toasty 36C.

Bureau of Meteorology information showed the extent of the effects of extreme humidity and low wind, with the actual temperature reading 21C at 11pm, though the apparent temperature was 38C.

All 1000 tickets were sold in the lead-up to the event, an annual fundraiser for Hedland Water Polo Association.

HWPA president Kate Tsorvas said the organisation was considering moving the event to April, with its typically cooler temperatures.

Port Hedland police Sergeant Jason Gentili said 10 officers patrolled the event until past 3am.

Police made 12 arrests on the night, including nine for disorderly conduct and one for assault.

Despite signage warning people not to walk home on the highway, Sgt Gentili said more than 100 people attempted the journey on foot.
