Revheads turn out in force at show
Burnouts and deep-throated V8s echoed through the Hedland Riders Shed grounds at the weekend as more than 250 enthusiasts turned out for the annual Bike and Car Show.
Powerful Harley and Victory motorbike cruisers and Monaro and Falcon muscle cars proved the favourites with the crowds.
Hedland Riders Association secretary Jason Ormerod said local resident Mark Thompson's 1975 XB GT Falcon and a 2001 Indian won the People's Choice Awards for best car and bike on show.
"That is the most bikes we have had on show for a while and we had a lot more bikes from out of town join us, which is great," he said.
The annual event is the Hedland Riders Association's major fundraiser and all funds will be donated back into community groups and organisations.
Last year, the group raised more than $8000 for equipment for long-term patients in the Hedland Health Campus.
Ormerod said this year's funds were still being tallied, but the final amount had been boosted by healthy beer sales among the strong turnout of riders from the HRA's sister associations in Karratha, Newman and Paraburdoo.
After admiring the bikes and cars on display, attendees then enjoyed a concert featuring bands Alternative, Bad Influence and Eight Ball, as well as a burnout competition.
With safety measures close to hand, one rider lit up the burnout event by shredding his tyre and then almost shredding his taillight and seat after continuing the burnout on the bike's rim.
Ormerod said that now the Bike and Car Show had been successfully held, 20 riders from the Paraburdoo and Hedland Riders associations were motoring up the North West Coastal Highway in convoy to Darwin to watch a V8 Supercars meet.
"It is what we live for; to have fun on the bike and raise funds for the community," he said.
