A teacher from Newman Senior High School who regularly goes above and beyond the call of duty has had his hard work rewarded by the WA Football Commission.

Sam Alexeeff won the Outstanding First Year AFL School Ambassador Award last week for his work promoting the game in the school and throughout the community.

Mr Alexeeff could not attend the award presentation in Perth at Patersons Stadium, but former West Coast Eagles captain Darren Glass visited Newman to present it to him.

Mr Alexeeff said he was humbled by the prize.

"There are so many volunteers in our community that don't always receive the recognition they deserve," he said.

Among Mr Alexeeff's achievements are structured lessons for the Kicking Goals students, updating the PE noticeboard letting students know about registration days, fixtures, re-scheduled games and fees, helping the Newman National Football League to find boundary umpires and searching for students to help coach and umpire junior teams.

He also ran a competition for students to design new jumpers for the Newman Vets and volunteered to run after school fitness and skills training sessions.

NSHS V Swans co-ordinator Dan Smith said the award was "extremely well deserved".

"Sam went above and beyond his duties as an AFL School Ambassador," he said.

"It is fantastic that he was recognised."
