The Finucane Island Sports and Recreation Club is set to shut its doors today after wracking up nearly $500,000 in debt.

The club's committee has released a statement in which it says it plans to place itself in the hands of liquidators.

As revealed by the Telegraph earlier this month, the popular social club had engaged Strategic Management and Consulting Services accountant Natalie Mills in September to review its finances.

The review found the club had accumulated approximately $290,000 in unpaid GST and PAYG liabilities owed to the Australian Taxation Office as well as $160,000 in unpaid superannuation.

The Telegraph understands Sunday will be the last day the club is open to the public.

Club manager Tom Keefe said he was devastated with the decision.

Long-time patron Chelsea Foote said she was angry and upset.

"My mum used to work at Finucane Island (in the late-1980s) when it was on the island and we've had a connection to it ever since then, that is why it is so devastating to us," she said.

"They have been huge supporters of every group in town, we are with the rugby league team the Hawks and they have been always a big support for us.

"I am angry and upset it is closing."
