AFL set to restart 2020 season in just six weeks despite coronavirus restrictions
Football could be back up and running in just six weeks, 7NEWS has revealed.
Reporter Tom Browne said a conference call between AFL CEO Gill McLachlan and all 18 club executives on Saturday was a success with a return date pencilled in.
“Footy is on track to return in mid to late June,” Browne said.
“Footy training in groups of 10 could be from May 11.”
The Herald Sun is reporting clubs were today told to contact their interstate players and arrange for them to return to their clubs as soon as possible.
The Queensland government has offered the AFL the same deal it has made with the NRL, according to 7NEWS, allowing teams to travel into the State.
The Northern Territory remains another option for the AFL, with the government confirming fans would be allowed in the stands given its low coronavirus numbers.
“I don’t think anyone contemplated that,” McLachlan said on Triple M radio.
“I think people have flagged it unlikely, but when you see what’s happened in Darwin, you don’t rule anything out.”
Browne said McLachlan had taken the time on Friday to speak with all club captains and some senior players to reassure them a hub proposal wouldn’t mean 20 weeks away from family.
“I think we’re back on the same page now with the players.” McLachlan said.
“I think they are really clear now there are options.”
Confirmation of a re-start to training, in groups of 10, from May 11 is set to be announced in a few days time, 7NEWS revealed.
McLachlan has confirmed the AFL is planning to host the grand final on October 31.
