WA Cricket is confident COVID has not spread through the State squad beyond opening batter Jayden Goodwin’s diagnosis.

Goodwin, who played his first two Sheffield Shield matches in November, tested positive on Friday and had to miss Subiaco-Floreat’s one-day Premier Cricket title win on Sunday.

A spokesman said the State squad received PCR tests in the wake of 20-year-old Goodwin’s positive result. All other players tested negative.

The players will have to complete further RAT testing before flying out next week ahead of the resumption on March 8, when WA will face Victoria in the Marsh One-Day Cup in Melbourne ahead of a potential final three days later.

It’s not the first time WA players have been rocked by COVID this summer, with six Scorchers players testing positive during the Big Bash League.

Speedster Lance Morris and batter Chris Sabburg missed selection for Perth’s BBL finals after contracting the virus, while Colin Munro, Matthew Kelly, Nick Hobson and Cameron Bancroft were also sidelined during the tournament.

Munro even said described his ordeal as “quite good” after his entire family was struck down while in a hub on the east coast.

“We were in Coffs Harbour and I tested negative a couple of times with the RATs (rapid antigen tests), but I had an itchy throat so I got a PCR test just to make sure and it came back positive,” he said last month.

“My boy (Connor) got it the next day and then (daughter) Chloe as well and then my wife Tehere got it the following day as well.

“It was actually good that we all got it at the same time as spent seven or eight days in our own little bubble before rejoining the team.

“We didn’t get too sick so it was actually quite good, I had a little bit of a fever here and there and I was a bit jaded for a couple of days but probably could’ve played cricket.”
