Essendon recruit Tom Edwards suffers shattering ACL injury at Bombers training after dream start to career
Essendon recruit Tom Edwards is set to miss the remainder of the season after he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament at training on Tuesday.
The club announced the shattering news later that day after scans revealed the extent of the 24-year-old’s knee injury.
“We’re all for feeling Tom. He’s worked so hard to get his opportunity at AFL level, and so for this to happen so early in his AFL career is devastating for him,” Essendon footy Daniel McPherson said in a statement.
“Tom will consult with a surgeon (on Wednesday) morning and finalise the course of action from there. The players, coaches and staff will continue to support him during this time.”
Edwards’ injury adds to a growing injury list for the Bombers, with fellow forwards Kyle Langford (hamstring), Peter Wright (ankle) and Matt Guelfi (hamstring) among the players currently sidelined.
The Swan Districts product was one of the feel-good stories of 2025, earning a dream call-up just weeks after he secured his spot on the Bombers’ list.
Edwards kicked three goals on debut against Adelaide in round two and featured in his first win in the club’s 12-point win over Port Adelaide on Thursday night.
A former teacher at Lesmurdie High School, Edwards was invited to train with the Bombers in January, the club he grew up supporting, and kicked four goals in a practice match to earn a spot through the pre-season supplementary selection period.
He quickly made an impression at the club, performing well in the VFL to earn a senior call-up.

“It’s a surreal feeling but I’m just so excited to don the sash and run out with the boys,” Edwards said at the time.
“To do it with the club I supported as a kid means so much to me and my family. As a kid, I lived and breathed Essendon, so it’s incredibly special. I just want to soak it all in and play an important role for the team.”
Edwards’ injury comes a year after Perth Demons product Jaiden Hunter tore his ACL months after being picked up in the 2023 mid-season rookie draft by Essendon. He was not offered a contract for the 2025 season.
