Mitch Wishnowsky’s parents travelling from Perth to see son play in NFL Super Bowl for San Francisco 49ers

Penny and Marty Wishnowsky have never missed a game that their son Mitch has played, so there’s no way they’re not going to be in Las Vegas for Monday’s NFL Super Bowl. The Wishnowskys will fly to the US from Perth this week in the hope their son will become the first Australian to play in a winning Super Bowl when his San Francisco 49ers face the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday. Mitch left Perth in 2014 to pursue his punting dream, began at Santa Barbara Community College and then excelled at the University of Utah before earning his NFL opportunity with the 49ers. The Wishnowskys are always watching. They watch Mitch no matter what day, time or place that he’s playing. They attended the Super Bowl when the 49ers lost in 2020. There was no way they weren’t going to be there again this year. “We’ve never missed a game,” Penny told The West Australian. “We’ve always been able to watch it. Even in college we watched every game. We won’t miss his games. That’s our way of supporting him. That’s our boy. “We’re very excited to be going. Not many people get to go to the Super Bowl. It’s unbelievable really. “Last time we were a bit more overwhelmed by it all. We’d only been to one or two games before they got into the Super Bowl. The fanfare was unbelievable. We couldn’t believe how big it was. “The last time was a bit of a bummer that they lost, so hopefully it’s a bit of redemption this time. It would be incredible. It would seal everything for Mitch. You want your boy to be at the top in anything they do. To win the Super Bowl would be icing on the cake. “It does feel surreal. It feels that way for Mitch as well. We talk about it with him all the time. He can’t believe it. He always says it is crazy. But he doesn’t get into the hype of it all. He’s low key. Mitch just gets on with everybody. They’re not all flashy. They’re all well grounded as a team.” Mitch has retained a strong connection to Perth. His best friend Josh is travelling to the US with Penny, Marty and Mitch’s sister Sam. Mitch and Josh met at Little Athletics when they were just seven. Penny travelled to the US after Mitch’s wife Maddie gave birth to their daughter Bowie in 2021, and the couple were in Perth last year before everyone flew to Bali for their wedding. “That was so much fun. At the last minute he told me he wanted me to walk in with him. That was really nice,” Penny said. “We’re close to Mitch. He rings two or three times per week. We speak all the time. We Facetime so we can see Bowie and Maddie. But that’s not the same as being able to give them a hug, hold onto Bowie and get into a good conversation. We’re looking forward to some family time.”
