Athletes often speak openly about how they manage their mindset and stay on track when they reach low points in sport, but it’s just as important to manage it when you’re in form and on a high as well.

I’m feeling really good about my own start to this year — it feels rewarding when you’re contributing to the team’s success and being given the opportunity to do so.

The side is in a good position halfway through the season and I feel like I’m playing my part.

It’s in these moments that I remember — yes, it’s good to enjoy the success while you’re having it, but making sure that doesn’t get to your head.

So for me, I stay as versatile as possible. I’m always in the mindset that I’m happy to bat anywhere in the top seven and grateful to have the opportunity to show I can bat at the top of the order.

I also remain a team player. I’m here to do what my side needs and play the role that is needed.

I block out the outside noise and listen to my coaches and experienced players, much like I would do if I felt out of form — they don’t make this easy sometimes in our entertaining Big Bash League, sticking a golden cap on us when we’re the leading run-scorer and all!

And the other thing I always remember is that no matter what, there’s always room for improvement. Even the best of the best have things they can fix. So that’s a reminder to keep training hard, listening and pushing myself.

I’m also lucky to have some very humbling parents, mum and dad make sure my head stays screwed on and remind me there’s still a job to do and runs to score.

They instil this kind of mindset in us at the Scorchers. It’s a very positive environment that strikes that balance between celebrating success — particularly the success of your teammates — but managing it too.

We positively reinforce each other, recognise our strengths and can have fun after a win, but we get straight on with it and stay focused on our goal of winning the title too.

Luckily there’s so many experienced players in and around our side too who have been through this many times and we can lean on for advice. I’ve always got my ears open for what these veterans have to say.

Right now it feels like we are going in the right direction this season. Things looked a little bit shaky after losing two early, but we’ve had two wins in-a-row and have the Thunder at home tonight.

We play our absolute best at Optus with our fans right behind us and I’m confident we’ll do everything we can to get another W on the board tonight.

I’m looking forward to seeing our thousands of supporters for the first time in the New Year!
