UPDATE: Dubai to Perth flight diverted to Melbourne finally lands after marathon near 14-hour journey

The Emirates flight from Dubai which was meant to land in Perth but was rerouted due to strong winds has finally landed in Melbourne, 2700km away from its original destination.

Four hours had been added to the journey after the diversion when the flight landed at Melbourne Airport at 8.50pm, about 13 and a half hours after it took off.

According to Perth Airport the flight attempted to land twice before the pilot decided to go to Melbourne instead.

It is not known how many people were on the flight.

Emirates has been contacted for comment.

The plane, an Airbus A380, had been due to land at 5.35pm on Friday.

The Bureau of Meteorology recorded wind speeds of 59km/h and gusts of up to 78km/h at Perth Airport at the time.

There is currently a damaging winds advice warning for parts of the metropolitan and regional areas.

It warns of wind gusts of up to 100km/h in Perth’s eastern suburbs on Friday evening.
