Kye Blight emerges victorious in two finals at Attwell Park Speedway in Albany

It was a birthday to remember for Kye Blight as he dominated Albany’s Attwell Park Speedway on Saturday night.

Blight won two finals in the respective feature divisions to celebrate his 31st birthday in style, continuing his wonderful record at the Great Southern venue.

In the Wild West Showdown for late models, Blight started on the front row of the 30-lap feature race and was never seriously challenged.

In a final marred by stoppages, Blight had superior speed and kept pulling away from the rest of the field when the race restarted.

Warren Oldfield tried his best to reel him in but Blight coasted to the chequered flag, crossing the line 1.196sec. ahead of his nearest rival.

Oldfield finished second while Victorian champion Peter Nicola edged out Joe Chalmers in a thrilling run to the line to grab third place by a narrow margin.

Chalmers and Jason Oldfield rounded out the top five in the final.

Of the 19 cars in the third round of the Wild West Showdown, two did not start while the returning Kodee Brown and Tasmanian Brad Smith were among five that failed to finish.

Earlier, Blight won two qualifying heats to secure pole position while the other preliminaries went to Brown and Ken Macpherson.

Katanning-raised Blight chased a second win in the Albany Production Sedan 5000, powering his way to victory and claiming the $5000 first-place prize.

Blight, the current WA Production Sedan champion, started from the fourth row in the 30-lap decider.

He crashed his car into the concrete wall in his final qualifying race but managed to start the feature race and went on to defeat Drew Ogle and Josh Fraser.

Albany’s Aydan Trewern started from pole position after a terrific run in the heat races and had Mitch Killeen on his outside.

Veteran Nuno Mendes and Albany’s Calon Ball would start on row two and Australian champion Kyle Sayer qualified in position five.

Blight hit the lead in lap 10 and was never headed from there while the battle for the minor placings was superb.

Ogle and Fraser made contact multiple times as they threw everything at each other but Ogle got the upper hand when it mattered.

Sayer finished a consistent night in fourth place while Killeen rounded out the top five.

Ogle charged through the field after starting in 14th position while Tylar Main also came from well back to end up sixth.

Trewern was undefeated going into the final but had a feature to forget, slipping back to ninth at the finish.
