Alexander Mark Sutton admits disturbing murder of handball coach and West Coast Eagles masseuse Patrik Weiss

A young man has admitted murdering the national men’s beach handball team coach at his Lockridge home. Alexander Mark Sutton was just 19 when he was charged with the murder of Patrik Weiss, who worked as a soft-tissue therapist for the West Coast Eagles and other professional sporting teams. The 45-year-old was found bound, blindfolded and with a collar around his neck at his Diana Crescent property on June 12, 2023. As police hunted for the culprit, including scouring a lake near the property, Inspector Geoff DeSanges said that the killing was not “random” and was a “targeted attack”. Sutton, from High Wycombe, was arrested five days later on June 17, 2023. Sutton, now 20, faced Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court via videolink from Hakea Prison on Wednesday, when his lawyer Katherine Dowling said the matter was “finally” ready to proceed. “He has quite a complicated history,” she said. Ms Dowling requested a psychiatric report, saying she anticipated they would want to speak with any previous psychiatrist her client may have seen. The matter was committed to the Supreme Court for a first appearance on May 5, with Magistrate Danielle Davies noting psychiatric reports were taking up to 20 weeks to obtain. Police said during their investigation that the victim was not known to the force. In a tribute posted online, Handball Australia said Mr Weiss migrated from Germany in 2004 and had been preparing the national men’s beach handball team for the 2nd ANOC World Beach Games in Bali, as Oceania Champions.
