Call for more umps

ALEX MASSEYNorth West Telegraph

Port Hedland’s burgeoning umpire fraternity is looking for more volunteers to adjudicate local footy games.

George Daccache, the North Pilbara Football League’s Hedland-based umpiring coordinator, is calling on all footy fans – young and old – to get involved this season.

Daccache said the NPFL was always on the lookout for additional umpires – with central, goal and boundary umpire positions available.

“There are about eight full time umpires in Hedland currently,” he said. “We’re looking at having three central umpires in both league and reserves and four boundary umpires to spread the workload. Currently we get umpires doubling up. Ideally we don’t want them doing two games back-to-back.”

Daccache said high school aged kids were welcome to join the ranks.

“We don’t discriminate – we would like young kids to join in if they love football,” he said. “It’s good for fitness. We’re a small group but we get on fine and look after each other.”

Daccache said ex-footballers past their playing days but who still wanted to be involved in the game were also welcome.
